Helicopter Approach Path Indicator HAPI Light

Helicopter Approach Path Indicator,HAPI light,HAPI System

The Helicopter Approach Path Indicator (HAPI) is an important visual aid used at heliports and helipads to assist helicopter pilots during approach and landing. It consists of a series of lights positioned along the approach path. The HAPI system emits a combination of red and green lights that provide guidance to pilots regarding their altitude and the correct glide path. When the lights are fixed green, it indicates that the helicopter is on the correct glide path. If the lights turn red, it means that the helicopter is too low and needs to adjust its altitude. Conversely, if the lights are flashing green above red, it indicates that the helicopter is too high and needs to descend for a proper approach. The HAPI system is particularly beneficial during night operations or in low visibility conditions when pilots have limited visual references. It enhances safety by providing pilots with clear and precise guidance during the critical phases of approach and landing. The Helicopter Approach Path Indicator plays a crucial role in ensuring safe and efficient helicopter operations at heliports and helipads.

     Overview:

The Helicopter Approach Path Indicator HAPI System allows the pilot to have the necessary visual information to place the helicopter on the ideal approach slope and can be used by day or night.

The HAPI system can be used by all helicopter as soon as it is set up since it does not require any airborne instrumentation. In compliance with ICAO requirements the Helicopter Approach Path Indicator HAPI must be located adjacent to the nominal aiming point and aligned in azimuth with the preferred approach direction.

The angle of elevation setting of HAPI must be such that during approach the pilot of the helicopter observing the upper boundary of the “Below Slope” sector (Fix Red) clear all objects in the approach area by a safe margin.

The Helicopter Approach Path Indicator HAPI System which emit in elevation four distinct types of light :

1. Flashing Green Light = Helicopter above the optimal approach slope optimum (too high).

2. Fix Green Light = Helicopter on the slope.

3. Fix Red Light = Helicopter slightly below the optimal slope (slightly too low).

4. Flashing Red Light = Helicopter below the optimal slope (too low).
